Tips for Staying Safe in the Digital Age

  1. Turn on two factor authentication on every account that you can, first being your email. Also bank, ETrade, FB, etc.
  2. Don't use the same password at more than one place.
  3. Don't ever install any browser toolbars. ex. Ask toolbar
  4. Stay current with the latest updates for router firmware, browsers, and operating systems. If you are running Windows you should also be running Windows Defender.
  5. Don't use snail mail for bills. Easiest way for someone to steal your identity is to steal your mail.
  6. Don't click on links in email ever! If someone sends you an email with a url you should type in the address manually, not go through the link in the email.
  7. Never save passwords in your browser.
  8. You can also use a password manager like 1Password, LastPass, or Wallet Guard.
  9. You should never go to an important site like a bank or email while you have other tabs open. Only have one tab open when going to these important sites. Never go to a site without SSL from public wifi or use a VPN.
  10. If your credit card company offers an app get it so you can monitor charges as they come in instead of waiting for the bill to come in.

For the truly paranoid:
  • You can run ad blocker, which is a browser add on.
  • You can switch your DNS to open DNS and turn on their bot detection.
  • Never go to a website without a trusted or non-expired certificate.
  • Don't download any software that requires a downloader like download.com by cnet.
