20 Tips for Staying Safe Online - 2019 Version

  1. Turn two factor authentication on all accounts. Use Google authenticator or a yubikey, not SMS.
  2. Don't use the same password more than once.
  3. Use a password manager like 1Password, LastPass, or Wallet Guard.
  4. Check your passwords against the haveibeenpwned.com database. Wallet Guard can do this for you using the k-anonymity algorithm.
  5. Don't install any browser toolbars or extensions that you do not trust.
  6. Stay current with the latest updates for router firmware, browsers, and operating systems. If you are running Windows you should also be running Windows Defender.
  7. Don't use snail mail for bills. Easiest way for someone to steal your identity is to steal your mail.
  8. Don't click on links in email! If someone sends you an email with a url you should type in the address manually, not go through the link in the email.
  9. Never save passwords in your browser.
  10. You should never go to an important site like a bank or email while you have other tabs open. Only have one tab open when going to these important sites. Never go to a site without SSL from public wifi or use a VPN.
  11. If your credit card company offers an app get it so you can monitor charges as they come in instead of waiting for the bill to come in.
  12. Use an ad blocker, such as AdBlock which is a browser add on.
  13. Switch your DNS to Open DNS and turn on their bot detection.
  14. Never go to a website without a trusted or non-expired certificate.
  15. Only download software from trusted sources.
  16. Don't answer silly quizzes online that can reveal security questions you may have answered for password recovery.
  17. Turn on full disk encryption FileVault or BitLocker.
  18. Use ApplePay, Goggle Pay, or cash over credit cards.
  19. Place IOT devices on their own separate network with a firewall.
  20. Use a trusted VPN such as IVPN.
